Troubleshooting: My External Monitor Isn't Working
It is incredibly frustrating when you’re ready to get to work and your second screen remains stubbornly black. Before you assume the hardware is broken, most monitor issues can be solved with a few quick checks.
Follow these steps in order to get your display back up and running.
1. Check Physical Connections
The most common culprit is a cable that isn’t seated quite right.
Unplug and Replug: Disconnect the video cable (HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C) from both the monitor and your computer, then firmly plug them back in.
Check Power: Ensure the monitor’s power cable is plugged into a working outlet and that the power light on the monitor is on.
Swap Cables: If you have a spare cable, try using it. Cables can fail internally without showing any outward signs of damage.
2. Verify the Input Source
Your monitor might be looking for a signal on the wrong "channel."
Locate the Source or Input button on your monitor (usually on the bottom or back).
Cycle through the options (e.g., HDMI 1, HDMI 2, DP) until you match the port you are actually using.
3. Force Windows/macOS to Detect the Display
Sometimes the operating system just needs a little nudge to recognize the hardware.
For Windows: Right-click the desktop and select Display settings. Scroll down and click Detect under the Multiple Displays section.
For Mac: Go to System Settings > Displays. Hold down the Option key, and a Detect Displays button will appear in the bottom right corner. Click it.
4. Check Display Modes
You might accidentally be in a mode where the computer thinks the screen is off.
Windows: Press
Windows Key + Pon your keyboard. Ensure you have selected Extend or Duplicate.Mac: Ensure the "Mirror Displays" or "Extend Desktop" settings are configured correctly in the Displays menu.
5. Update Your Graphics Drivers
Outdated software can prevent your computer from communicating with newer monitors.
Windows: Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager. Expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics card, and select Update driver.
Mac: Graphics drivers are bundled with macOS updates. Go to System Settings > General > Software Update to ensure you are on the latest version.
Still not working?
If you've tried all the steps above and the screen is still blank, try connecting the monitor to a different computer. If it works there, the issue lies with your original computer's port or software. If it doesn't work anywhere, the monitor may require professional repair.
